A seated seminar-style tasting with themed flights for the true wine aficionado! Delve into the personalities and science behind the flavors of Zinfandel.
The spotlight turns to the next generation of Zinfandel producers at this year’s Flights forum. Top winemakers, who are already leaders in California winemaking, will put their best foot forward as they are interviewed by our illustrious moderator, Joel Peterson. Topics such as how they came to wine, why they chose Zinfandel, why they chose the region they did, how they make their wine and how that has evolved or not, will be covered. Joel will also ask these next-gen winemakers their opinions on the reputation of Zinfandel now and what its future may hold, their thoughts on old vines versus young vines, as well as posing other thought-provoking questions. Iconic wines from each of their wineries will be tasted and discussed. Attendees will walk away having heard straight from the source what drives these gifted artisans.
Moderator Joel Peterson | Winemaker Ravenswood Winery
Joel Peterson has been the Winemaker of Ravenswood since 1976 and is a founding member of ZAP, having served as two-time President. Joel unwittingly embarked on his winemaking apprenticeship at the age of ten when he began tasting with the San Francisco Wine Sampling Club, organized and operated by his father. Joel works with 100+ growers who provide grapes for Ravenswood annually, consulting on all aspects of vineyard management. Joel relates equally well to the poetry and the product that forms the basis of winemaking today. ZAP is fortunate to have had Joel moderate the Flights event since 2010.
Special Appearance
Dave McIntyre, wine columnist for The Washington Post since 2008, will kick-off the Zin Flights seminar with moderator Joel Peterson, providing his journalistic and East Coast perspective on the future of Zinfandel. Dave has contributed wine columns to several publications including Washingtonian Magazine, Capital Style, DC Magazine, Decanter.com, Restaurant Digest, San Francisco Chronicle, Touring & Tasting, Washington Life, Wine Enthusiast and several others.
